The History of National Day 

The National Day is a significant and symbolic occasion that marks the day when Singapore gained separation from Malaysia and became a sovereign nation on August 9, 1965. 

Singapore first declared independence from Britain in August 1963. It joined the Federation of Malaysia in September 1963 after the 1962 Merger Referendum of Singapore. Two years later, Singapore left the federation. On 9 August 1965, Singapore separated from Malaysia to become an independent and sovereign state. 

Since then, our tiny but strong country has succeeded against the odds, emerging on the world stage as a major commercial hub, financial centre, global player, and more. These growths and achievements are to be celebrated, but not to be taken for granted. 

National Day 2023 

The theme of this year’s National Day is: “Onward As One”. The theme calls upon Singaporeans to look forward confidently and move onward together in building our shared future as one united people. 

“Onward” reflects a nation that is forward looking and resilient to any challenges that lie ahead. 

“As One” underscores the collective ownership of Singapore’s future and the importance of inclusivity and unity.
